Congenital and hereditary defects in puppies and kittens include, but are not limited to, liver shunts, hip dysplasia, cherry eye and other ocular anomalies, renal disease, spinal malformation, limb anomalies, cleft palate, cardiac abnormalities, allergies, umbilical hernias, dental malocclusion, and certain intestinal disorders. These problems will carry a variety of symptoms and are most readily identified through regular veterinary care. Treatments may range from medical to surgical intervention with often unpredictable outcomes and expense.
