Giardiasis is caused by ingestion of protozoa, most commonly from water contamination, and can be a problem in dogs and cats. Signs may be acute, intermittent or chronic mucous filled diarrhea, and occasional vomit. Fecal evaluation and blood tests are diagnostically available and treatment options are numerous.
Depending on geographic location, many pets are exposed to this problem at a very early age, can carry the infection with no symptoms, and cross species contamination and vaccine benefits are debatable topics.
