Kennel Cough/Tracheobronchitis

"Kennel cough" or Tracheobronchitis is a progressed upper respiratory disorder which can be caused by a number of different bacterial and viral contributors and irritation. It is most commonly seen in dogs having had social exposure within the previous 3-7 day period prior to onset of symptoms. All dogs are susceptible and puppies are especially sensitive due to their underdeveloped immune status. Kennel cough is considered a highly contagious infection with aerosol transmission the most common route of exposure. Proactive therapy with antibiotics and cough suppressants is the most successful way of minimizing the severity and possible progression toward pneumonia. It is not unusual to see an infection require 2-3 weeks of antibiotic therapy and multiple veterinary visits.
