"Puppy Lemon" laws are United States state laws that remedy consumers who have recently purchased a pet from a retail pet store. The puppy lemon laws that have already been enacted vary accordingly from state to state and include such remedies as reimbursement up to the purchase price, reimbursement up to two times the purchase price, and additionally reimbursement for veterinary care, plus sales tax.
Each year non-profit organizations, breeders, animal rights activists, the veterinary community, and animal enthusiasts push for legislation which sets higher standards for the care of animals in the retail pet industry, thus affording consumers more rights than ever for pet health care.
Puppy lemon laws require that pet stores and breeders properly maintain the animals health while in their care and reimburse the consumer for many pet aliments. Some laws even require that the store be liable for illnesses outside the retailers control, such as illnesses hereditary or illnesses existing before birth.
The amount of liability depends on your state. If you are unsure of your states puppy lemon law contact your state's attorney's office or contact PAWS and we can assit you in determining your state's requirements.
