Rhode Island Enacts Puppy Lemon Law

Consumers who purchase a puppy from a Rhode Island pet store are now entitled to specific remedies. Retailers are legally liable for anything attributable to the pet store within 20 days after the sale, and anything congenital or hereditary for a period of 2 years.

Ohio Bill May Impose Uniform Pet Warranty

Senate Bill 173 was heard on June 26th, 2007 and further action may be taken by the committee. The bill could impose significant liability for those breeding locally or selling dogs in-store, including a statutory pet warranty. The warranty would make the pet store give full purchase price of the animal back as a refund within 21 days, if the consumer can show proof that the dog was examined within 14 days of date of purchase with a valid veterinary health certificate stating the animal was ill at the time of purchase. more »

The Animal Protection Act proposed in the District of Columbia is set for a June 6th hearing. The act would amend current laws to substantially increase liability to any sellers of live animals, and even extend to sellers of pet products.
